The first of August is fast approaching, and on that day the LEGO 42172 Technic McLaren P1 will be released. As most of you have probably seen, a GWP will be available with this set - LEGO McLaren P1 Logo (set number 6535735). We were lucky enough to receive this 178-piece set ahead of its release date. Check out the build below.
This mini McLaren gift is nicely presented in the little square boxes we associate with GWPs. All the pieces are contained in one bag, and the instruction book is held in the box window.

After removing the manual and having a quick flick through, it transpires that there are 69 steps to this build. The first section we build is part of the main cog system. There are a lot of black and blue connectors involved in this build!

Larger LEGO Technic pieces are added around the outside of the mechanism, creating a cage-like support system. Next up is a separate cog system that we then attach to the main build. This part has three cogs of different sizes. A printed McLaren piece is added to a little micro build, and this is then slotted into the main section.

A handle is added next, which allows the McLaren sign to pop up and down. If we said we didn't have fun turning the handle for a while and watching the sign go up and down, we'd be lying!

A large black piece then has a couple of curved pieces attached to it, which encases the mechanisms. The two large dark yellow circular pieces are joined together with a couple of connectors and a long Technic support piece. This is then added to the top of the build, using the yellow rod for support.

The framework for the sign is the next step. This is quite a simple matter of rods and connectors. The P is formed from LEGO 1x2 grey slopes, cheese wedges, 1x1 tiles and plates, and a few other pieces. It is then mounted on the framework. The 1 is constructed from LEGO 1x2 slopes, 1x1 bricks, and a couple of other pieces. There is a tile printed with "TM." This structure is then added to the framework, too.

The final step is to attach the "P1" to the top of the build, then turn the handle and watch the logo rotate.
This was a little larger than we were expecting, and if you enjoy motorsports and are gassed for the release of LEGO 42172 Technic McLaren P1, then you will appreciate this GWP. It was quite a straightforward build, with no new techniques or anything that stands out. It will look great on the shelf alongside the 1/8 scale LEGO McLaren P1 hypercar and will really enhance your display.
