The Christmas tree has been a popular American tradition since 1848 when Prince Albert and Queen Victoria of England were photographed gathering around a Christmas tree with their family in the Illustrated London News. This popularised the Christmas tree as a fashionable seasonal home decoration, soon spreading to the States.
Decorating the Christmas tree is one of the most joyful traditions to share with family members at the start of December. Decorations range from tinsel to baubles to wooden toys, and other personal mementoes gathered over the years.
As staunch LEGO enthusiasts, we have gathered many brick-built LEGO decorations and ornaments over the years, including a few bigger sets to display beneath the tree. In this blog, we take a look at some of our favourites, including new releases. Unfortunately, some of these sets are now retired, but you can still grab them on other websites.

These two LEGO ornaments (sold separately) are the most bauble-like sets LEGO have released. At the time of writing, most can be found on eBay for under $20.00 each (new and sealed). We love the cute characters inside, and the red ribbons are a Christmas-themed classic "“ they make a wonderful addition to any Christmas tree.
The LEGO® BrickHeadz™ Nutcracker is also an excellent opportunity for a bit of makeshift DIY. Simply attach some string to the head using another brick to hold it in place, and hang it on a branch! This retired product retails for a similar price on eBay.

These hanging ornaments remind us of classic wooden Christmas tree ornaments, such as toy soldiers. They all match up perfectly on the tree, with a fun assortment of winter animals and nostalgic imagery of snowflakes and gift boxes.
The Wintertime Polar Bears set can be separated into three hanging ornaments with some more DIY handiwork.
Â
It's not just gifts that should go under the Christmas tree "“ we have seen plenty of creative additions over the years, ranging from nativity scenes to home-crafted snow effects.
For ourselves, we're planning to display the new LEGO Ideas Home Alone 21330 brick model (you can see our mock-up above!) or the Santa's Sleigh 40499, both of which add a bit of colour and pop culture aesthetic to the display.
We're also tempted to pick up the new LEGO Icons Holiday Main Street 10308 set. Combined with separate Powered Up devices and tracks, it would be exciting to watch the tram ride around the base of the tree!

We've come across plenty of My Own Creations, where creative LEGO enthusiasts have opted to create their own ornaments and decorations from scratch. Let us know below if you have ever attempted one!
Special mention goes to the 2019 LEGO IDEAS submission of Christmas Balls Ornaments from enthusiast "˜L87R85'. Sadly, this entry did not receive enough supporters to proceed, but we think it is a great example of what LEGO should consider releasing in future.
