LEGO Ideas sets are made with a lot of love, both by the original creator and by the LEGO Ideas designers who turn the concept into a finished product. River Steamboat 21356 is a shining example of that.

It's designed to highlight the craftsmanship that went into building a historic paddle steamer, from the inner workings of the paddle wheel, through to the ornate wood and metalwork that adorned the decks and hull of the boat.

Marina Stampoli, the LEGO Ideas designer who worked on the set, said on LEGO.com: "I love boats, even though a paddle steamer is one of the few types of boats I've never been on. I loved the architectural aspect of the boat, the intricate details, but also the engineering side of it."

The ship's decks can be removed easily to explore the spaces inside, starting with the 'texas deck' which is home to the wheelhouse, crew cabin and bathroom. The main deck holds a restaurant and music stage.
Engineers will love the boiler deck, which houses a kitchen and a steam engine museum, where the centrepiece is the ship's own working brick-built piston, along with a Watt steam engine and a turbine called an 'aeolipile'.
Access to these interiors is possible thanks to the creation of unique new connector elements, which only have friction on one side. These detach to split the ship's axles into smaller segments, so that each deck can be lifted off.

The moving parts on LEGO Ideas River Steamboat include the steam engine's paddle, which is activated by pushing the boat along a surface. There's also a knob on the outside of the boat to turn the ship's wheel and steer the rudder.
When it's time to dock, you can drop the anchor and rotate the boarding stages, ready for LEGO Minifigure passengers to disembark. So much care has been put into every movable element in the design.

"We wanted the set to have as many realistic functions as possible," said Marina. "The steering was one of them. Starting from the pilot house at the very top, the steering wheel is connected to a series of cross axles that run vertically through all the floors and then horizontally through the hull to reach the rudder at the boat's stern."
Aaron Hall, who created the original LEGO Ideas proposal under the name CTDPower, is an architect and lifelong LEGO fanatic. He told the LEGO Ideas blog: "Building LEGO sets is probably my strongest childhood memory. There isn't a Christmas or birthday where a LEGO set wasn't topping my wish list."

The finished design features a number of nods to Aaron and his family. The ship's name, Amelia, is Aaron's daughter's name. The band playing on stage is named after his son Breckin. There's even a red cardinal symbol on the band's drum, which has a personal meaning for Aaron's wife.
Aaron said: "Having my set chosen for production by the LEGO Group has been a dream come true. A dream that I've had since I was a little boy."

With its ornate architecture, rigging and realistic moving engine parts, this gorgeous LEGO Ideas set makes for a superb display piece - and no doubt LEGO Ideas 21356 River Steamboat will inspire the dreams of a whole new generation of brick-building enthusiasts.
