It's great to see the Dark Knight Tumbler make a comeback in LEGO form. It's 12 years since the original LEGO The Tumbler (76023) was released, and a massive 21 years since the Tumbler made its screen debut in Batman Begins.

If you're shopping for your kids (or grandkids) and don't know your Batman history, the Tumbler was the Batmobile in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, which included Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012).

Those were the Christian Bale movies, with Heath Ledger as The Joker. Two other actors have since played Batman on the big screen: Ben Affleck (2016-2023) and Robert Pattinson (2022-present).

Why make a new LEGO Tumbler now?

For many fans, the Tumbler is still the iconic Batmobile. Based on military hardware, rather than an armored sports car, it was a perfect match for the gritty 'realism' of the Dark Knight Trilogy.

And they really built it - visibility for the driver was poor, but the vehicle built by the effects team and used in the movies was fully functional and really could do a lot of the stunts shown in the trilogy.

That makes perfect sense for a LEGO Technic Batmobile set which, as we'll see below, you can also control and drive around your house or garden (just don't try to jump any rooftops...)

Why is the piece count so low?

Before we go any further, let's address that piece count. It's pretty low for a standalone 'hero' Tumbler build. The 2014 LEGO Tumbler (76023) had 1,869 pieces and 2 LEGO Minifigures, while the 2021 LEGO Batmobile Tumbler (76240) had 2,049 pieces and 2 LEGO Minifigures.

That's because the new 719-piece LEGO Batmobile Tumbler 2026 is a LEGO Technic CONTROL+ build. Connect your phone to your completed Tumbler using the free CONTROL+ app and it becomes an RC car with remote control over its steering and lights.

It's a very cool feature, and the trade-off is a smaller piece count. It's a shame LEGO didn't still find room in the cockpit for a LEGO Batman Minifigure, but it's understandable.

How is the 2026 LEGO Technic Batman Tumbler powered?

The new LEGO Tumbler is powered by a rechargeable battery, which is included in the set, so you don't need to worry about replacing batteries.

You'll need a USB-C cable to charge it, and although the cable is not included, you can buy them very easily - and if you have almost any rechargeable device at home already, there's a good chance you already have a USB-C cable, as it's a very common standard.

Thoughts on the 2026 LEGO Tumbler (42239)

Do we like it? Yes, we do! It captures the squat, military shape of the Tumbler with its angular bodywork, plus those chunky tires that give the impression it can handle rough terrain.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the LEGO Batman theme, and the new Tumbler comes hot on the heels of the March 2026 Batmobiles and LEGO Batman Logo (76330).

For fans of the Nolan Trilogy, LEGO Batman 42239 will be the pick of the crop, and we can't wait to see it speeding through LEGO Gotham City builds this summer!

History of LEGO Batman Tumbler Sets

Here's how the new LEGO Batman Tumbler 2026 stacks up against previous 'hero' Tumblers.

A few things stand out:

• This is a middle-ground set in terms of age, size and piece count.
• No Minifigures - because this is an RC car, not a 'play set' as such.
• A 12+ age is perfect for a more gritty realistic era of Batman.

Finally, don't be fooled by the price of the 2014 LEGO Tumbler (76023). Although it looks cheaper than the 2026 LEGO Batmobile Tumbler, its RRP would be about £229.99 with inflation over the 12 years since its launch - making the new set over 25% cheaper in today's money.
