We've often speculated on how epic a Dune LEGO theme could be. And while no full-scale theme has been announced, LEGO have revealed their first standalone LEGO set based on the sci-fi series "“ LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter 10327.

David Villeneuve's film adaptation of Frank Herbert's esteemed book series met with near-universal praise for its sumptuous visuals, cinematography, atmosphere and conceptual design, and the reveal of the first LEGO set based on the movie is a welcome addition for AFOLs.

LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter 10327 "“ Features

The Atreides Royal Ornithopter 10327 is a brick-built interpretation of the special ornithopter (a flying vehicle that achieves flight by mimicking an insect's wing motion) used by main character Paul Atreides and his family during their travels on the dangerous sand-swept planet of Arrakis.

Often billed as "Star Wars for adults", Dune was first penned by Frank Herbert in 1965. Set in a distant future, it revolves around interstellar politics, religion, and ecology on the desert planet of Arrakis, the only source of an invaluable resource needed throughout the galaxy (spice melange). The series, celebrated for its intricate world-building and philosophical depth, primarily centres on the power struggles between the noble houses of Atreides and Harkonnen before evolving into the tale charting the rise of a messianic figure in the form of Paul Atreides.

The epic film-themed LEGO set recreates the House Atreides aircraft with fold-out, flappable wings, deployable landing gear, and a fully operational cockpit. Perhaps the most highly-anticipated element of the set is the inclusion of the world's first selection of official Dune character minifigures. Special mention has to go to the unique, long-robed Baron Harkonnen, who could often be seen floating along in the film "“ we're delighted that LEGO have decided to include this bizarre, iconic character in the set. We also get the principal members of the Atreides royal family and their servants.

With Dune Part II set to hit the big screen on 15 March 2024, the timing of the set is perfect for fans to immerse themselves once more in the mystical world of Arrakis. Next up, a UCS Sandworm perhaps? Time will tell.
