Spring 2023 will see a brand new LEGO store opening at London's iconic Battersea Power Station on the south bank of the River Thames. Why not pop in the next time you take a trip to the UK capital?
The Grade II listed building once served as a coal-fired power station and has become a recognised London landmark thanks to its original Art Deco design and distinctive brickwork, including four huge chimneys and lime wash towers looming over the landscape. It has featured in numerous television programmes, music videos, films and computer games over the years, though perhaps most quintessentially on the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals.
After the station closed in 1986, the famous building went through a long period in the wilderness. Over the years, various redevelopment plans were put forward, including ideas to turn it into a theme park, a new Chelsea F.C. stadium, and an urban park. Finally, in 2022, works were completed to turn the empty interiors into a shopping mall, including restaurants and leisure venues. Apple has also announced its intention to open a new office on the site.
As well as all our favourite LEGO sets and products, the store promises to include building events and an innovative display and play area where collectors can get building advice from store experts. According to the official retailer listing on the Battersea Power Station website, fans can also create a "one of a kind" LEGO minifigure at the Build-A-Minifigure Tower or visit the "unique" Pick-A-Brick wall.
Discussing the new store, Alison Wood, LEGO Retail Director for UK and Ireland, said, "The new LEGO store in the iconic Battersea Power Station will inspire builders of all ages with endless play opportunities. We are excited to launch a store that will deliver innovative experiences and be a destination for product launches, events and a hub for our LEGO fan community."
No official date has been confirmed yet, though the official LEGO website store listing confirms it will open this Spring, so expect to see doors open within the next few months. They advise fans to check back soon for more information on the grand opening"¦
We're amazed that LEGO have never released an official creative brick replica of the iconic power station, although plenty of good fan-made MOCS exist online. Check out this build from -jimmynick-, or legoist1's similar realisation.
The building has also been featured on numerous LEGO IDEAS submissions, the most recent being a LEGO microscale interpretation, although sadly, none of the entries took off. This is a shame as we think a larger version of the building would make a perfect addition to the LEGO Architecture range"¦
